What are Dental Crowns

The purpose of a crown (also known as a cap) is to encase and protect the surface of a tooth. Although crowns are used for many different reasons, the most common is to treat a decayed tooth after it has had a filling. In previous years, teeth were only restored with the use of metal caps but we now use porcelain crowns which are the same color as your teeth and blend in easily.

Why Consider Dental Crowns

Consider dental crowns if you

  • have a cavity that is too large for a filling
  • need to cover a dental implant
  • have a missing tooth and need a dental bridge
  • have a tooth that is cracked, worn down or weakened
  • have had a root canal treatment - the crown protects the restored tooth
  • want to cover a discolored or badly shaped tooth to improve your smile

Are Dental Crowns Covered by Insurance?

Dental insurance will typically cover all or part of the cost of dental crowns if they are needed to maintain good dental health such as supporting a weak tooth or repairing a cracked tooth. If a dental crown is requested for cosmetic reasons such as improving the appearance of a smile it may not be covered by your dental insurance plan. It is best to contact your dental insurance provider to determine if and how much your plan will cover.

What Does Getting a Crown Involve?

A crown procedure usually requires two appointments. Your first appointment will include taking several highly accurate molds (or impressions) that will be used to create your custom crown. A mold will also be used to create a temporary crown which will stay on your tooth for approximately two weeks until your new crown is fabricated by a dental laboratory.

While the tooth is numb, the dentist will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and shaping the surface to properly fit the crown. Once these details are accomplished, your temporary crown will be placed with temporary cement and your bite will be checked to ensure you are biting properly.

At your second appointment your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be carefully placed to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.

You will be given care instructions and encouraged to have regular dental visits to check your new crown.

Teeth which do not match up in size to the rest of your teeth can also be restored with the use of a crown.
