Get Beautiful, White Teeth with Teeth Whitening
A brilliantly white smile is a reflection of a welcoming personality, but if your teeth are dingy or discolored, you might not smile as much as you would like. With the advanced teeth whitening treatments available at All Smiles Dentistry, you can love your smile again. Our dental office offers several restorative choices.
Tooth whitening (or bleaching) is a simple, non-invasive dental treatment used to change the color of natural tooth enamel and is an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile.
#1 Aesthetic Concern
Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most patients, there are a number of ways to whiten teeth. The most popular method is using a home tooth whitening system that will whiten teeth dramatically. Since tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the newly bleached teeth.
Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up maybe needed every several years, and more often if you smoke, drink coffee, tea, or wine.
Reasons for Tooth Whitening
- Fluorosis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development)
- Normal wear of outer tooth layer
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.)
- Yellow, brown stained teeth
What Does Tooth Whitening Involve?
This type of tooth whitening usually requires two visits. At the first appointment, impressions (molds) will be made of your teeth to fabricate custom, clear plastic, trays.
At your second appointment, you will try on the trays for proper fit, and adjustments will be made if necessary. The trays are worn with special whitening solution either twice a day for 30 minutes or overnight for a couple of weeks depending on the degree of staining and desired level of whitening. It is normal to experience tooth sensitivity during the time you are whitening your teeth, but it will subside shortly after you have stopped bleaching.
You will receive care instructions for your teeth and trays, and be encouraged to visit your dentist regularly to help maintain a beautiful, healthy, white smile.
Techniques to Whiten Teeth
You may have seen teeth whitening gels, pastes, and other products available in supermarkets, but the fastest and most effective way to get a brilliant smile is to visit the dental office. Our cosmetic dentist takes the time to explain the details of each option and help you find the right choice for you. We take safety precautions to minimize the risk of irritation to the gums—something that you simply won’t find in commercially available products. When you visit our cosmetic dentistry office, you can choose from the following teeth whitening treatments:
In-office teeth whitening, which is sometimes called “chairside bleaching,” only takes one office visit to complete. At All Smiles Dentistry, we use a professional-grade whitening gel. After protecting the gums with a rubber shield or a special gel, our dentist carefully applies the bleaching gel to your teeth. The gel remains on your teeth for a set period of time before the dentist removes it. The result is beautifully white teeth.
Another effective way to lighten up your pearly whites is to request our take-home kit. Our dentist will make impressions of your teeth to create custom-fitted trays that protect the sensitive gums. You’ll take these trays home with you along with a professional-grade whitening gel to use at your convenience. Although you’ll receive in-depth instructions, please feel free to call our dental office if you have questions about the proper application.
Laser Teeth Whitening
One of the latest advancements in teeth whitening technology is the application of special lasers. If you have particularly stubborn stains on your teeth, this may be a good option for you. Laser teeth whitening involves the professional application of high-intensity bleaching gel. Then, the dentist applies a laser to activate the gel and improve its effectiveness. To achieve the result you desire, you may have the gel reapplied and activated more than once before you leave the office.
Steps to Preserve the Results
If you ever need additional teeth whitening treatment, All Smiles Dentistry is always available. However, there are a few steps you can take to make your results last longer. First, consider reducing your intake of highly pigmented foods and beverages. These include green tea, coffee, red wine, and berries. You could also try drinking through a straw to minimize your teeth’s contact with the pigment. Tobacco use is another major cause of tooth discoloration, not to mention oral cancer. The tar in tobacco smoke turns the teeth dark and the nicotine, when it combines with oxygen, turns the teeth yellowish. Consider quitting to preserve your beautiful, healthy smile.
